2026/1/22
From January 21 to 22, Japan Joint Staff, Chief of Staff, Gen UCHIKURA Hiroaki attended the NATO Military Committee in Chiefs of Defence Session in Brussels, Belgium. In the sessions and bilateral meetings, discussions were held on the future direction of cooperation between Japan and NATO, as well as with individual NATO member countries. As many questions and comments were raised by participating countries regarding the security environment in the Indo-Pacific region, a high level of interest in the region within NATO was confirmed.
Last year, from July to August, Spanish frigate SPS MĒNDEZ NŪÑES, UK aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, and Norwegian frigate HNoMS Roald Amundsen, among others, made successive port calls in Japan. In addition, in September, as “Atlantic Eagles,” Japan Air Self-Defense Force F-15 fighters conducted Friendly visits to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany. 2025 was a year in which cooperation between Japan and NATO member countries stood out prominently.
Security in the Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic is inseparable and indivisible. Japan Joint Staff will continue to deepen cooperation with NATO and its member countries.
