The Mission’s approach to communication to the public

2025/11/8
Dear visitor,

Welcome to the website of the Mission of Japan to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)

The Mission was inaugurated in January of this year as an independent mission, following its formal separation from the Embassy of Japan in Belgium. Since then, we have been working to strengthen our strategy for public relations. Now that our communication channels are finally in place, I would like to take this opportunity to explain our approach to communication.
Since its establishment, this Mission has pursued various initiatives to further develop Japan-NATO relations. Needless to say, the international community faces serious security crises, such as the war in Ukraine. Within this context, the Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic regions have become increasingly interconnected, making it only natural that Japan strengthens its ties with NATO for the sake of international peace and stability.

However, over the last half a year, I have felt that there is still considerable room for the Japanese public to deepen their understanding of NATO and the activities of our Mission.  NATO is a regional political and military organization based on the principle of collective self-defence. While it is playing a crucial role in the Ukraine conflict today, it has also been instrumental in maintaining the peace and stability of the international community as a whole by achieving victory in the Cold War after World War II and preventing large-scale armed conflict in Europe until the war in Ukraine. I believe it is important for people both in Japan and abroad to deepen their understanding of NATO's activities and the work of this Mission.

NATO is an organization whose core mission is deterrence and defence, and the nature of a military organization imposes constraints on the transparency of its activities. In fact, most activities may require secrecy or may even be negatively impacted by transparency. Fully recognizing these constraints, our Mission intends to advance efforts to help you understand NATO and our Mission's activities as much as possible.

Specifically, we will communicate information about NATO activities, our Mission's activities, and the security situation, particularly in Europe, primarily through our Mission's website but also via social media platforms such as Facebook, X, and Instagram, in both Japanese and English.

Personally, as Ambassador, I would be delighted if these efforts helped inspire even one more Japanese citizen, especially among the younger generation, to take an interest in international politics and security.
From November onwards, we will step up these communication efforts.
